The greening programme involving the Social Forestry Wing of the State Forest Department and the public institutions in Kochi is getting a legal cover this time.Marking the World Environment Day celebrations, extensive planting of saplings will take place in the district on June 5. The annual exercise will have a legal framework this year so that a proper system will be in place to ensure that the saplings are given adequate care and protection.Public institutions, mostly educational institutions and the Forest Department, will sign Memoranda of Understanding for nurturing the saplings for a period of 20 years. As many as 10 government-run educational institutions have come forward to participate in the programme.During the first year, the Forest Department would take up the responsibility of nurturing the saplings. From the second year onwards, it would be the responsibility of the institutions to protect the saplings, said M.A. Anaz, Assistant Conservator of Forests (Social Forestry). The seedlings, to be distributed under the programme, were raised in nurseries a year ago.
Most of the seedlings have by now grown up to a height of 1.5 metres. They will grow to a height of three metres in one year. The participating agencies needed to water the saplings during the summer months and protect them from cattle, he said. Annual campaignThis year, as many as six lakh saplings have been readied for distribution.

Residents associations and individuals may collect the saplings from the office of the Social Forestry Wing at Manimala Road near Edappally (Phone number 0484-234 4761).Planting of seedlings on the flanks of pathways will not be promoted in Kochi as a large number of them were found destroyed during road expansion programmes. Focus on BrahmapuramThe mega event on June 5 will be the bio-fencing programme to be held on the campus of the solid waste treatment plant of the Kochi Corporation at Brahmapuram. Around 5,000 seedlings of plants that can survive and grow in water-logged areas will be used for creating the green fence along the border of the campus. On a question on the success rate of the social afforestation programme, the official said an independent evaluation held during 2016-17 had put the survival rates of samplings planted under such campaigns at 56%. Green spotsBarring the Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary located near the Kerala High Court, there are no major green spots in the city. However, green patches with abundant and natural growth of trees could be located on the eastern parts of the district. Left undisturbed for years together, vegetation has grown significantly in some isolated patches in Angamaly, Kalady and Malayattoor areas.Though no efforts had gone into the documentation of the extent of such wild growth in the district, the role of such green patches in influencing the micro climate of the region was well known, said Mr.
The presence of such patches would help in reducing the atmospheric temperature besides supporting animal life, he added. A tree for a childMeanwhile, the Kochi Corporation will launch a greening programme, ‘A tree for a child’, in the city on June 4.
The scheme is to plant a sapling for every child born in Kochi. The residents can opt for planting the saplings on their holdings. The civic body will provide space for planting the sapling for those who do not have the space for it. The scheme will be launched at a house named ‘Vipanchika’, located near Parthas on M.G. Road, at 10 a.m.
